The Mighty Royal Frankenstein

The Royal 10 (1922)
This project was my first massive undertaking and taught me so much about patience, mechanics, repair, and the value of the typewriter community! It's a forever piece in my collection especially because of the custom side panels made for me by Typewriter Chicago.

Blue Bird
Darren W.

Blue Bird (1936)
"Here is my Blue Bird 15A. Made in 1936. It's a nice typer and seems fairly rare or at least in the U.K. it is, especially in the blue colour and still with its matching spools. The case is also in a nice blue to match the typewriter. I purchased it as i liked the colour, shape and the shop decal that is still on it. It had a full service including a new platen and feed rollers fitted before i purchased it. It's an ordinary Pica typeface but considering it's age it still solid and imprints well with very little paint loss. Although i have yet to find out if any famous people used a Blue Bird in the U.K. unlike the Coronas, Good Companions, Olympia Splendids and Empire Aristocrat that i have. I thought this one might be of more interest compared to the other ones i have as there is an abundance of the other types in the U.K."

Smith Corona

Smith Corona Flat Top (193x)
"Here is my lovely Maroon Smith Corona Silent Flat Top. I first saw one of these on Facebook Marketplace and thought 'for $35 I need to grab this'. I ended up not being able to get it and slowly fell in love with the concept of owning one. A few months later I finally get one for $80! If you were to ask me, it is one of the most beautiful American Portables that have ever been made. The type feel is lovely as these early Smith Corona machines are, and you just can't beat that color."

Smith Corona Galaxie Deluxe (197x)
"Don’t have a ton to say about my typewriter. Got it off eBay for parts and surprisingly enough the only broken thing was the spacebar. The little linking arm was just loose so once I reattached it, it worked perfectly. Not bad for $20. It’s just nice having something that is purpose built for one task and despite being around 60 years old, it just keeps working."

"I bought this for 25 dollars and it got me into typewriters. It works great too."

Royal KMM (1947)
"This 1947 Royal KMM is my favorite machine in my collection because of its particularly unique set of symbols. I've never been able to find a full explanation about what their use may have been, so the mystery of who may have owned it and what they may have been using it for is something that I find fascinating. The heart symbol is a great addition to letters and notes, and I've used the other symbols in various typed art projects."

The Electra
Nathan C.
Electra 110
"I bought this guy from eBay about a year ago and haven’t even cleaned it outside of blowing it out once and wiping off the exterior. It’s in perfect working order. I enjoy typewriters from a writer/user standpoint than from a collector standpoint. With that being said, I prefer electric machines since they’re easy to use. This model, Electra 110 specifically combines the aesthetics of using a manual machine (return lever, type bar action) with modern designs like the computer like touch. The SCM is tough and engineering from this era is spot on. My favorite feature is the changeable type, page gauge, and power space."

A Classic in Script
Alex H.

Smith Corona Classic 12, Script Typeface
"I fell in love with this thing after seeing it on Facebook marketplace. The original owner received it as a gift, used it very lightly, and kept it in storage practically since it was new. I love the blue colour, the industrial design (there's a certain art to a piece of robust mechanical technology), how it sounds and feels, the fact that it is Canadian-made, but most of all I love the script typeface because I have a disability that makes cursive impossible for me, and so this machine kind of completes me in a way I really like. It's my first and I'm sure it won't be my last."
